University, Hazlett Trophy winners 2008-9. Back row l to r: Nick Wanden, Matt Sadd, Blair Travis, Hamish Evans, Kartik Jagannathan. Front row: Adam Clark, Daniel Norman, Simon Thomas, Colin Owens (c), Graham Murray, Jamie Brundell. Regular captain Michael Burns was away playing for the Firebirds.

Day 1: University bat first and slump to 21 for 4 before the middle order steps up. Clarky scored 33 and Billy 40 before Hamish Evans played a blinder. Having gone from 89 to 97 with consecutive boundaries, he blazes the next ball over midwicket ...

... and celebrates a legendary innings for VUWCC with Si Thomas looking on.

Poverty Bay and the Bay of Plenty join forces for a decent 9th wicket partnership. Hamo is last out for 116 as University make 268. J'ville start well on a good pitch with a fast outfield but Billy grabs one in the last over of the day to make it 54/1 at stumps.

Day 2: Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny as University went to work in the field. Not sure what the score was on the adjoining pitch.

Hamo charges in. Thanks to Hamo's Dad for providing some of the photos.

Matt Sadd twirls down some mystery and guile ...

... and gets his rewards.

An outstanding bowling and fielding effort sees J'ville bundled out for a paltry 130 (Billy 5 wickets, Saddy 2).

The star of the show ... Billy (Graham Murray) rescues University from 30-odd for 4 in the second innings with a fine 71, backed up by 40 not out from Si Thomas at number 10. VUWCC post 186 and J'ville are 15/0 at stumps chasing 325 to win.

Day 3: J'ville were still in the hunt at 150/5. University keep chipping away (Billy took 5 wickets, 10 for the match) and here Hamish Evans lets rip with just a couple of wickets required for victory.

Jamie Brundell: Laughs in the face of pressure

Si Thomas, fresh from claiming the crucial 7th wicket with a cunning tactical full toss, charges in from the Udy St end.

Despite the drama, Diggy still had his eye on the birds.

A couple of old geezers take a break behind the stumps as Gisborne's finest steams up into the wind.
Man-love moments I: Mudgeway's valiant knock comes to an end as Diggy (?) takes a smart catch on the midwicket fence from Hamo's bowling ... and University win the Hazlett.

Man-love moments II: The boys were a little bit happy.

Varsity legend Colin Owens leads the victors from the field.

Some pretty stoked, long-suffering supporters.

Waiting for the trophy. Trav inspects the damage.
"Cheers Gav". Forest grabs the spoils and thanks the ladies for the spread.

Thomo has a new toy: "... but you can't drink out of it". |
