VUWCC Club Newsletter January 2008
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our past and present VUWCC members.
It has been a steady if not exciting first half of the season, the major highlight being the weather with all teams, barring the senior side’s first game, not suffering any major disruptions due to rain. This is a major improvement on last season I am sure you will all agree! Most teams have had some good success so far this season, both individually and result wise.
The Club itself continues to grow, with this season being comprised of 11 men’s teams and 2 women’s teams. The senior side continues to put its best foot forward in the Hazlett Trophy competition but a lack of consistency has prevented the team from reaching its potential so far. The team will be striving to reach the Hazlett Trophy final to be held over three days over Easter in March.
On an individual level the following is a summary of outstanding achievements to date:

The Club has again had Michael Burns selected for the Wellington side and we wish him all the best for the remainder of the season.
I would also like to make mention of Andrew Morris, VUWCC’s Club Captain last season. He has taken up a position as a lawyer in Dubai and left the country last July. We would all like to thank him for his great contribution to the Club, a contribution I am sure he will add to when he returns to New Zealand. He maintains a keen interest in the goings on at the Club and the results obtained by all the teams.

News for 2007/2008
· We have a new sponsor for the Club this season. Four Kings is a new bar that has just opened in Wellington on the corner of Dixon Street and Courtenay Place. They are primarily a sports bar with a restaurant situated upstairs. We hope that this relationship can continue to be developed in the seasons to come. Feel free to have a look at their website at http://www.fourkings.co.nz/
· While we do have a new sponsor and will be taking advantage of its facilities, we continue to use the Clubrooms at Kelburn Park with most teams taking advantage of being able to enjoy a cold beverage and a barbecue at the end of a long days play.
· Some exciting news for 2008 is the re-laying of the wicket block at Kelburn Park. This was completed in September/October and the first scheduled game is set down for 26 January 2008. We all hope that the new block will be a huge improvement on the old one as it had deteriorated over a long period of time.
· One of the aims we plan to have completed by the end of the season is to complete the process for making VUWCC an incorporated society. A simple exercise that we hope will ensure continued funding from a variety of sources as funding is becoming harder to come by every season.
· We have again had a successful collection of subscriptions and continue to lead the way in Wellington Club Cricket in this regard. Many thanks to all the team captains for their hard work in ensuring subs are paid.
· Our website also continues to show most other sporting clubs the way forward. We continue to encourage all teams to make a contribution to the website. If you haven’t visited, please do at http://www.vicunicricket.com/
· We have undertaken this season to update the Honours Board situated in the Clubrooms, and as part of this we will need to have a second board built. We hope to have this completed by season’s end that will result in all of those great achievements attained by VUWCC displayed for all to see.
Past Players Day
As you will see from the enclosed flyer, we are holding a day for past players at Kelburn Park on Saturday 23 February 2008. I would encourage you all to come and make sure you get all your old cricket colleagues to attend with you. The more of you who can attend the more successful the day will be for all involved.
Donations
As always the club is appreciative of any contributions past players are able to make to the club, whether they be financial or otherwise. If you would like to make a donation to the club, please post it to VUWCC, PO Box 14130, Kilbirnie, Wellington.
Finally, good luck and best wishes for 2008. I hope to see as many of you as possible on February 23rd.
Regards,
Simon Thomas
